Massage Modalities

Sports Massage

Developed to help with muscle systems used for a particular sport. Sports massage uses a variety of approaches to help athletes in training and will alter, depending on where the client is in their training program, for example -- before, during, or after sports events. It utilises a lot of more dynamic techniques such as stretching, MET and PNF active release techniques. You might use it to promote flexibility and help prevent injuries. Or, it may help muscle strains, aiding healing and recovery after a sporting event or injury.

Trigger Point

Trigger point therapy is a bodywork technique that involves the application of pressure to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body. A typical trigger-point area will display a “referred or radiating pain pattern” from the site of strain. Trigger point therapy is said to interrupt the neural signals that cause both the trigger point and the pain. The object is to eliminate pain and to re-educate the muscles into pain-free habits. In this manner, the swelling and stiffness of neuromuscular pain is reduced, range of motion is increased, and flexibility and coordination are improved. The therapy can also relieve tension and improve circulation.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy can put a lot of stress on your back, shoulders, neck, and abdominal muscles. Pregnancy massage is designed to relieve some of the aches and pains that are common during pregnancy. Pregnancy massage can help you cope with the changes to your body that occur while you are pregnant. It can be especially useful to ease discomfort at a time when you cannot use some medicines or some other medical options. Pregnancy or prenatal massage is used to reduce stress, reduce swelling in the arms and legs and relieve muscle and joint pain in pregnant women. Massage in pregnancy can involve many different massage techniques. It is usually a gentle massage performed with both mother and baby in mind.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release focuses on reducing pain by easing the tension and tightness in the trigger points. It is not always easy to understand what trigger point is responsible for the pain. Localizing pain to a specific trigger point is quite difficult, as the body will “set up” bands of tension that can run throughout the body. For that reason, myofascial release is often used over a broad area of muscle and tissue rather than at single points. These areas where the massage therapist is working may not be near where the pain originates or where you feel the pain most prominently. Myofascial release works the broader network of muscles that might be causing your pain. It tries to reduce tension throughout your body by releasing trigger points across a broad section of your muscular system.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a form of bodywork that involves applying pressure to the hands and feet to produce changes in pain and other benefits elsewhere in the body. The underlying theory behind reflexology is that there are certain points or "reflex areas" on the feet and hands that are connected energetically to specific organs and body parts through energy channels in the body. By applying pressure to reflex areas, a reflexologist is said to remove energy blockages and promote health in the related body area. Pressure on these reflex points also helps to balance the nervous system and stimulates the release of endorphins that help to reduce pain and stress.

Relaxation

Relaxation massage is great for people who have had a stressful week/month, as it allows the body to catch up and recharge. A relaxation massage treatment will usually involve flowing strokes and kneading, performed at your chosen pressure. The focus of a relaxation massage is to de-stress, calm and relax the mind and body. It’s a less specific form of physical therapy than remedial massage in regards to pain relief, but is still very therapeutic especially with the busy lives we live today, as it is great at relieving the stress that is held in the body and the mind. This massage style aids with your mental and emotional health, as it calms the mind and settles the nervous system. Relaxation massage provides a general loosen up, encourages blood flow throughout the body, and helps boost the immune system by stimulating the lymphatics.

Working with Chronic Disease

The term chronic disease is used to describe a wide variety of diseases. In general, chronic disease is termed as a disease that persists over a long period of time, often have no known cure and the symptoms are sometimes less severe than those of the acute phase, often called “flares”. They may be progressive, resulting in complete or partial disability, or even lead to death. Massage therapy, in its various forms, is considered an excellent preventative and complementary treatment for many chronic conditions including cancer, arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain, bursitis, premenstrual syndrome and menstrual cramping, high blood pressure, asthma and diabetes, among others. Massage therapy has also shown positive results among patients receiving treatments for chronic conditions, not only for the physical benefits but also aiding in lowering anxiety, pain, and nausea, improving energy, and re-establishing a connection with themselves and others.

Hot Cupping

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation, and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage. As the air inside the cup cools, it creates a vacuum. This causes your skin to rise and redden as your blood vessels expand. The cup is generally left in place for up to 3 minutes. The suction and negative pressure provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system (which makes it an excellent treatment for high blood pressure). Cupping is used to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and even cellulite.

Lymphatic massage

The fluid in the lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins from the bodily tissues. Some health conditions can cause lymph fluid to build up. Lymphatic drainage massages can benefit people with lymphedema, fibromyalgia, swelling or oedema, skin disorders, fatigue, insomnia, stress, digestive problems, arthritis, and other conditions. Lymphatic drainage massage is a form of gentle massage that encourages the movement of lymph fluids around the body.

Dry Needling

Trigger point dry needling involves the insertion of thin filament needles into muscles to relieve pain and restricted range of motion. This therapy is commonly used in conjunction with remedial massage techniques to facilitate direct and precise release of muscular tension and adhesions. This allows specific targeting of trigger points within muscles. By targeting and penetrating the muscle trigger point with a needle an impulse is sent to the brain allowing the brain to normalise the nerve impulse to the muscle. The same applies to tendons, ligaments, and fascia. And can be applied to shortened fibres within soft tissue as a result of an injury, spasm, or repetitive/ over-use.

Hypnotherapy
(Master Practitioner)

The hypnotic state makes a person better able to respond to suggestions. Therefore, hypnotherapy can help some people change certain behaviours. Hypnosis has helped tens of thousands of people change their lives. Hypnosis has been scientifically proven to be effective in creating change for specific repetitive behaviours such as smoking cessation, weight loss, depression, stress, phobias, fears, anxiety, motivation, and pain management. As a tool for positive, lasting change, hypnosis can work where many other methods have not.

Samvahan

Samvahan is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘even the dead can be awakened.’ It is a 3000-year-old Ayurvedic method of balancing the natural healing rhythms of your body. Samvahan was revitalized in the 1930s by Dr. Ram Bhosle, the personal healer for Mahatma Gandhi and Winston Churchill, among others. Samvahan is a gentle massage-like treatment that physically amplifies the internal vibrations that drive your health. It is soothing, musical, and meditative. As a practitioner, Beauty Body and Balance is trained to “tune” your body by reading and working with these subtle vibrations, sensing a state of harmony or imbalance in the nerves, muscles, organs, glands or other tissues and creating a gentle, yet tactically noticeable counter-vibration. This healing vibration travels through your body to the point of “stickiness” or illness and corrects the inharmonious vibration

Reiki and Seichim

Reiki is an ancient healing practice that was rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan in the 1920s. Reiki is pronounced Ray Key, Reiki & Seichim Healing and means “Universal energy”, “life force”, or “vitality”. Reiki transmits the elemental energy of the Earth. In 1980, Seichim healing was rediscovered by Patrick Ziegler in Giza, Egypt. Seichim – pronounced Say-keem – is said to be one of the healing arts practised in Egypt that transmits the elemental energies of Water, Fire, Air and Angelic Light of Spirit. Reiki & Seichim is probably one of the most relaxing, calming treatments you can receive. It provides time and space for you to just stop, release stress and tension and to be gently nourished and nurtured. If you have received a Reiki healing before, you will have experienced the deep relaxing resonance of peace that permeates the entire body, mind, and spirit. It’s like a positive re-set, a recalibration of the disparate parts of self and the putting back together of ‘human-being’ in a wholesome way.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (Master Practitioner)

In a simple way we can say that NLP is a collection of practical techniques, skills and strategies that are easy to learn, and that can lead to real excellence. It is also an art and a science for success based on proven techniques that show you how your mind thinks and how your behaviour can be positively modified and improved. It is also the study of excellence and how to replicate it. NLP is a tool to understand how the language of our mind creates and runs the patterns we have in life (both good and bad). Once we have this understanding, we can apply a variety of NLP processes to enhance, change or alter our patterns of thought, behaviour, and emotion. One of the massive positives in NLP is that the practitioner is not required to know what your exact trauma is! Although this may come out in session with the client, we are motivated to remove or loosen the grip of the emotions around the event, not have you relive it time and again. This is HUGE for the client and allows massive change in their life. Once we have identified negative patterns, or positive behaviours you would like to remove or enhance, we use a variety of techniques to bring about change.
These may include:

- The Swish Pattern,
- Parts Integration,
- Time-line therapy(R),
- Content Re-framing,
- Hypnotherapy
- Clearing Emotions around trauma,
- Clearing Phobias,
- Anchoring positive states, including moving you from procrastination to motivation techniques.
- Strategies,
- Affirmations,
- Clearing limiting beliefs (a big one!!)
- Mindfulness.
